Glendale, Calif. – Dec. 10, 2013 – Everbridge, the leading provider of critical communication solutions, today announced that the City of Williamsburg, Virginia, has chosen Everbridge to send time-sensitive messages about severe weather events, hazardous environmental issues, and violent crimes in progress. In addition to emergency response, the Everbridge solution can be used to provide businesses, residents, and city staff with important information, such as power outages, street closures, and water utility maintenance. Williamsburg has a population of more than 15,000 residents across roughly nine square miles, and is home to Colonial Williamsburg, a popular tourist destination, and William and Mary College.

With the Everbridge system, messages can be delivered through multiple contact paths, including landlines, cell phones, email addresses, and text-capable devices, to ensure that residents, businesses, and city staff receive emergency notifications in minutes. Integrated geo-targeting allows messages to be delivered directly to impacted contacts, based on a radius from a specific point, or selected streets, neighborhoods, or designated areas. And emergency conference bridging allows city leaders, including the city manager, fire chief, and city council members, to connect instantly, from any location, to discuss important updates or next steps.

“I think it’s really going to transform the communications capability, both internally and for residents. By starting now, we’ve got that groundwork to really do some great things. Everbridge ensures that there’s a way to measure the effectiveness of our emergency notifications and be held accountable,” said Kate Hoving, Communications Specialist for City of Williamsburg.

City of Williamsburg will provide an online portal for residents to sign up for alerts, allowing members to provide contact information and specify how they would like to receive messages. The City will also be able to integrate data from the white pages in order to reach residents and prevent communication failure in the case of extreme emergencies.

“We selected the Everbridge alert system after extensive research and found it to have the best functionality and reporting ability,” added City of Williamsburg Fire Chief Pat Dent. “Now our staff and Neighborhood Response Team members have a state-of-the art tool to help us serve our citizens even more effectively.”
